81 On Seventh was built in 1907 by E. J. Phelps, a local entrepreneur who was very active in the Twin Cities with a variety of businesses including banking, furniture, and elevators in addition to being instrumental in developing public art. Early in the building’s history, Phelps sold the building to the owner of The Golden Rule Department store which was located across the street and it functioned as part of the overall store complex. Later in its history, the building was purchased and used by Borg & Powers as a furniture store and subsequently was sold to the Northern Furniture Company in the mid 1970’s and continued to be used as a furniture store location until it was purchased by the current owner, HFS Properties.
HFS Properties, the owner of The Golden Rule Building block, purchased the building in 2000 to redevelop it into an office building. The building was then completely renovated to provide commercial office space that is both historic and high tech, vintage and vibrant.
